A "Street Works" Installation at LA Municipal Art Gallery, June 3 - 26, 1980
Below are images from sadly damaged slides taken of my street works installation at LA Municipal Art Gallery, June of 1980. Josine told me the show was reviewed by Suzanne Muchnic but was pushed out for advertising space in the LA Sunday Times, so there is no review available.

My "street works" series and installations are all about a holistic spatial and visceral experience of visual art communication. The subject matter depicted is the urban street as object of daily transit & experience. The everyday nature of urban streets can make observation of it's aspects to seem too obvious, too mundane for serious thought. I wanted to point out however, just how many aspects, views, are very raw but beautiful if we take a close look. Fabricated sections and chunks of street were created as simulation of an environment and as art objects in their own right. The potential these objects have as abstract compositions is explored as well as the implied viscerality of weight, heft and a variety of views of the street as an object of physical examination. This is landscape brought inside. It is a simulated experience, as are all depictions, representations, and seen through faceted views and modalities. Hand colored photographs of abstract compositions of roadway and sidewalk bring on a fantasy daydream aesthetic visons. Asssemblage works combine associative subject matter through street-found objects into social issues associated to urban streets, automobiles, oil-energy, pedestrians, human interaction and children street-play. The installation is about the street but also about combining visual art depiction and abstraction, reality and illusion. There is no convenient compartmentalizing of these things now in the 21st Century. All human made "things" must be perceived for their representative, illusionistic, aesthetic functional purposes as ideational tools. To experience what humans make as ideas, not as controlling assumed realities projected from systemic scripts for human "norms".
